Exit 42

Exit 42 — highway sign showing Distraction and Hyperfocus as two exits

As a salesperson, I spend a lot of my life behind the wheel.

Driving between meetings.

Picking up my kids.

Running errands.

Some of my best ideas have come from the driver's seat.

Music usually starts it.

A lyric.

A melody.

A single line that sparks an idea.

Then my brain does what it has always done.

One idea becomes five.

Five become fifty.

I'm solving problems, designing something new, replaying conversations, connecting dots that didn't seem related a minute earlier.

My hands are still on the steering wheel.

My eyes are still on the road.

But mentally...

I'm somewhere else.

Then reality catches up.

I look up.

I've driven right past my exit.

Again.

I've missed turns.

Missed texts.

Missed phone calls.

Sometimes I've even forgotten where I was supposed to be going.

From the outside, it probably looks like I wasn't paying attention.

The truth is, I was paying attention.

Just not to the same thing everyone else was.

That's what ADHD feels like for me.

It doesn't feel like a lack of focus.

It feels like my brain instantly chooses a different destination before I even realize I've left the one I was on.

That's why I created this sign.

Living with ADHD can feel like driving a highway with only two exits.

One leads to distraction.

The other leads to hyperfocus.

The hardest part isn't choosing a direction.

It's remembering which exit you meant to take.

That's the paradox of an ADHD brain.

It can lead us away from where we planned to go...

While taking us exactly where we were meant to be.
